Senior Ecologist

  • Have you noticed people noticing nature?

  • Business waking up to its net zero responsibilities?

  • A renewed interest in – and respect for – the natural world we depend on?

  • Fancy being at the heart of that movement?

Biora is growing - and we’re looking for the best talent out there to help us grow quickly, effectively and – most importantly – sustainably.

And one of the best things about working in a small, dedicated team? The impact your role will have – and the speed with which you’ll learn from other disciplines.

The Ecologist role is at the heart of everything we do.  You’ll play a key part in the success of our inhouse ecology team here in Greater Manchester, organising and delivering a full range of ecological appraisals and protected species surveys, reporting and preparing plans.

You’ll be involved at every stage of the project – from the initial client approach, through proposals, surveying, assessment and reporting, even mapping if that’s where your skills lie.  You’ll also be given full training in Biodiversity Net Gain calculation using the latest Defra 3.0 metric.  Your day-to-day work will be busy and varied, including:

  •         Preliminary Ecological Appraisals

  •         Protected Species Surveys (including bats, badger, otter, water vole, Great crested newt, other amphibians, reptile, breeding/ overwintering birds, invertebrates and vegetation.

  •         Ecological Assessments and Impact Assessments

  •         Habitat Regulations Assessments

  •         Biodiversity Enhancement Strategies

  •         Mitigation Schemes

  •         Ecological Management Plans

  •         Reasonable Avoidance Measures

  •         Method Statements

  •         Licence Applications

  •         Licence Discharge

  •         Site Monitoring and Management.

You’ll work at the heart of a fantastic team of fantastic people.  Multi-disciplinary skilled in ecology, soils, biodiversity, landscape, arboriculture and mapping.  You’ll be a good communicator and a real people-person, with an absolute passion for the environment.  We’ll provide you with a programme of training and charitable days, that will help you grow as we grow, and further your career in the directions you decide are right for you.

We’re based in Altrincham, on the Manchester tram line, in the beautiful landscape setting of a 100-acre golf course (with a handy pub next door).  Most of our team use public transport to get here and we’re all hybrid workers – splitting our working week between the office, field survey sites and home.

To join our team we’ll need you to have:

  •        A focus on excellence: delivering the highest quality work, on time and on budget

  •         High academic qualifications in ecology or biological/ environmental sciences

  •         An in-depth understanding of ecological legislation and policy framework

  •         Excellent field survey skills (Extended Phase One Habitat with some protected species and/ or botanical surveys)

  •         Excellent reporting, written and communication skills

  •         Strong project management and organisational skills

  •         A full UK driving licence

  •         A ‘team’ approach – and commitment to continual learning in a collaborative environment

  •         Ideally you’ll already be a CIEEM member

  •         Ideally you’ll have experience of working on Biodiversity Net Gain schemes, using the Defra 3.0 metric.

You’ll also be great with clients, co-consultants, subcontractors and suppliers.

As well as the technical skills we’ll need, we provide our full team with core training every year in:

  •         Project Management

  •         Communications

  •         Personal Productivity…

….because our success relies on every one of our team excelling in these three core skills.

Having said all that… If we feel you’re the right person, and we’re the right company, we’ll provide the additional training we think you might need to be our best fit. We know that the most talented people aren’t always the most vocally confident – so if you think you might be what we’re looking for, please go ahead and get in touch.
